The Darron Lee Case And The Risks Of Relying On AI For Legal Advice

AI_Advice2

Artificial intelligence technology is now widely available to the public, many individuals seek information about legal issues or possible defenses for criminal charges using AI chatbots to provide them with information regarding their case. However, recent events involving former professional football player Darron Lee underscore the legal dangers that can result if an individual relies on AI instead of seeking legal advice from a human lawyer. The case shows how conversations using AI technology can be used as evidence and how ChatGPT cannot provide legal advice.

The allegations against Darron Lee

Darron Lee is a former NFL linebacker who also played for Ohio State in college. He was arrested in February 2026 and charged with first-degree murder for the death of his girlfriend. According to reports, the victim was found dead in their home in Ooltewah, Tennessee.6

During the proceedings, it was revealed that Lee used ChatGPT just before making contact with authorities. It was revealed that he sent questions to the chatbot about what to do in case someone was unresponsive or what injuries could have been caused by falling.

These digital communications can indicate that Lee was attempting to provide an explanation or excuse for the circumstances that caused the victim’s injuries. These communications made through ChatGPT have been used as evidence in the case.

The case is still ongoing, and Lee is considered innocent until proven guilty. However, the chats with ChatGPT are a strong piece of evidence against him.

AI conversations are not confidential

One of the biggest things to take away from this case is that communication with an AI system is not under attorney-client privilege. When someone talks to a lawyer, their communications will not be revealed in court.

On the other hand, when someone inputs information into an AI system, it can be stored electronically and possibly recovered in a digital investigation. It can also be used as evidence in a court of law.

When someone uses an AI system to seek advice or guidance, they can inadvertently create a digital record of their plans.

AI cannot replace legal judgment

Another major drawback of relying on AI systems is that they are not capable of giving the same level of judgment or strategic guidance that can be provided by an attorney who has been trained to handle the law.

While ChatGPT responds based on patterns, it does not have a complete understanding of the law or the situation of an individual who seeks legal advice.

While this may not be of much consequence in many areas of life, when it comes to the law, relying on AI systems can be extremely dangerous.
